Postmortem
My Responsibilities
Design a fun and interesting first person shooter with minimal scope
Implement the game’s features, including: combat systems, death and respawn systems, enemy AI, objectives, and overall gameplay
Handling the game’s building and submission
What Went Right
Final Product had strong design and audio, and integration of assets was successful.
Integration of narrative enhanced the overall experience
Scope was kept minimal and within reason, leading to no cuts in the final product
Significant amount of knowledge gained on Unreal Engine 4
What Went Wrong
Art direction was not strong due to the lack of a 3D artist
Used Git as version control, leading to unsolvable merge conflicts that cost a significant amount of time
Unfamiliarity with Unreal Engine 4 led to a late submission due to long build times.
Lessons Learned
Invest in narrative and audio early in the project rather than the last minute
Keep scope low to ensure strong design
Invest in additional version control software, such as Perforce, when using Unreal Engine 4
Build early to reduce stress at the end of the jam
